Do you ever find yourself knitting and pausing to admire the beauty and simplicity of color? I’ve fallen in love with the rich depth of handspun yarn, and this pattern celebrates subtle color shifts with simple texture. ASYNCHRONOUS LOOP uses stockinette and reverse stockinette stripes with short row inserts to create a subtly asymmetrical and one-of-a-kind cozy cowl. The design is built on a module and therefore easy to adjust for a longer or shorter piece. It’s totally reversible and great for handspun yarn or leftovers.

YARN
Sample is shown with a combination of handspun yarn and a coordinating dyed mini skein. Fingering weight yarn (tonal or variegated) may be used in lieu of the handspun yarn as shown. Fiber and yarn are both by Golden Hour Knitwear, www.goldenhourknitwear.com

MAIN COLOR
2-ply handspun yarn 100% Rambouillet. Colorway: Jagged Shore. Finished skein: 483 yd / 442 m (119 g), 18 WPI. Sample used 353 yd / 323 m (87 g).

CONTRAST COLOR
NSW fingering, 100% Fine Merino Wool, 87 yd / 80 m per 20 g. Cowl can use 1 or 2 colors.
Sample shown in dark blue from Jagged Shore mini set. Sample used 39 yd / 36 m (9 g) of 1 color of yarn with Option 1 – Icord edging (unnamed tonal blue)

FINISHED DIMENSIONS
Finished size will vary based on number of pattern repeats. Sample shown with 7 pattern repeats.
Sample dimensions:
Height: 8.5” / 22 cm
Circumference along short edge: 42” / 107 cm
Circumference along long edge: 52.5” / 133 cm

Each pattern repeat adds approximately 6” / 15 cm along the short edge and 7.5” / 19 cm along the long edge.

GAUGE & NEEDLES
23 stitches & 32 rows = 4” / 10 cm in pattern, blocked. Gauge is not critical but will impact finished size and yarn requirements.
US 4 / 3.5 mm circular needle, min. length 24” / 60 cm or size needed to get gauge

TECHNIQUES
Knit stitch, purl stitch, slipped selvedge, German short rows, grafting, picking up stitches for applied edging (optional)

From Patti N.

Shana is a very professional designer. Her pattern was clearly written, easy to understand and follow. She is quick to answer questions or concerns during her tests! I would be happy to test knit for her in the future.

From Azariah’s Fibre Arts

I met Shana for the first time at an in-person event in early 2020, before the world shut down. She was at a small fiber festival sharing one of her new designs and her story about being an architect who now designs modular knitting patterns. I was hooked. I have tested for her, met her again multiple times and asked her questions about the industry and designing. She is a down to earth fun person. She is also honest and helpful. If you have a chance to work one of her patterns I highly recommend it! Some of the construction is a bit outside the box, but totally worth the effort. Just take it one step at a time and wait until you’re alone to concentrate if needed. Once you get it, you’ve got it! Thank you Shana for making fun knit patterns and sharing them!

Azariah’s Fibre Arts has test knit many Shanalines Designs patterns including Cohenside Cowl (DK), Air Hugs Wrap, and Turnover.

From Cori B.

What a great test knitting experience! The expectations were very clear, there was constant communication (I love the use of discord for test knitting- so much more streamlined than using an IG chat or an email)- I love that it was a communal experience without being overwhelming. I would absolutely apply to test knit again.

And the pattern is so ingenious- a fun and quick knit, that feels solid, with minimal finishing (literally two ends to weave per mitt). I’m so excited to use them!

Cori B. was a test knitter for Turnover.
