SPLIT DECISION HAT LIGHT is here! This fingering weight version of my scrappy DK weight hat design is engaging to make and fun to wear. I used self-striping yarns for samples of this hat. The fun of watching color changes makes this fly off the needles. The finished hat can be worn with the vertical section in front, horizontal section in front, or a split down the middle. The overall height has a little bit of slouch built in, should you prefer to fold up the brim. So many choices.
No self-striping yarn? No problem. This uniquely shaped hat is a great canvas for variegated yarn, showing off changes in direction, or those mini skeins we all seem to collect.

YARN
Signature BFL Fingering by Woolens and Nosh, 85% Superwash BFL, 15% Nylon, 390 yd / 357 m per 100 g, or similar fingering weight yarn, www.woolensandnosh.com.
An adult-sized hat requires about 55-70 g of fingering weight yarn. Mix and match colors as you like, striping partial skeins to make something truly unique. Each half of the hat takes roughly the same amount of yarn, so weigh your project after completing the first half to know how much additional yarn is needed.
Sample (Size 3) shown in colorways Confetti Cannon (vertical side and brim) 117 yd / 107 m (30 g) and coordinating tonal dark blue (horizontal side), 105 yd / 96 m (27 g). Total yarn used: 222 yd / 203 m (57 g).

26 stitches & 52 rows = 4” / 10 cm in garter stitch knit flat, blocked
US 2 / 2.75 mm circular needle, 24” / 60 cm or size needed to get gauge. The same size needle in 16” / 40 cm and 32” / 80 cm lengths may also be helpful.
Spare circular needle in same size as working needle
Crochet hook of similar size for provisional cast-on
It is possible to create sizes between these as well by understanding your gauge and desired finished dimensions. Because garter stitch is so stretchy, this hat can fit a variety of head sizes. It can be worked with up to 4-5” / 10-13 cm of negative ease for a tighter fit or 1-2” / 2.5-5 cm of negative ease for a looser fit. See additional notes on P. 4.
TECHNIQUES
Provisional cast-on, knit stitch, increases and decreases, modular garter stitch joining
